Home vs. Public

Your Garage Is the Best Charging Station in Tampa

Tampa has more than 130 public EV charging stations. For most drivers, home charging wins on every metric that matters.

Cheaper Per Mile

Charging at home on Tampa Electric's off-peak rates costs a fraction of what public DC fast chargers charge per kWh. Most EV owners add about $35-$50 to their monthly electric bill, replacing what would cost far more in fuel or public charging fees.

Effortless Convenience

Pull into your garage, plug in, and forget about it. No detours to charging stations, no waiting in line, no apps to manage. You wake up every morning with the range you need, it becomes as automatic as charging your phone overnight.

Real Charging Speed

A standard 120V outlet (Level 1) adds only 3-5 miles per hour, barely enough for short daily errands. A dedicated Level 2 charger installed by our team delivers 24-44 miles of range per hour, fully replenishing most EVs overnight.

Level 1, Level 2, and Level 3 Charging, Explained

EV charging is categorized into three levels based on power output and speed. Understanding the difference helps you choose the right setup for your home.

Level 1

Standard Outlet Charging

120V AC · Standard Wall Plug

The slowest charging method, uses a regular household outlet. Most EVs come with a Level 1 cord. It adds roughly 3-5 miles of range per hour. Making it impractical as a primary charging solution for most drivers. Best used as a temporary backup when Level 2 isn't available.

Power output1.4–1.9 kW
Miles added per hour3–5 miles
Full charge time24–50+ hours
Installation requiredNone
Level 2

Dedicated Home Charger

240V AC · Hardwired or NEMA 14-50

The most practical and cost-effective choice for home charging. Requires a dedicated circuit and a wall-mounted charging station. Delivers 24–44 miles of range per hour — enough to fully recharge most EVs overnight. This is what we install for Tampa Bay homeowners.

Power output7.2–19.2 kW
Miles added per hour24–44 miles
Full charge time4–12 hours

Level 3 / DCFC

DC Fast Charging

400–1000V DC · Commercial Only

Also known as Direct Current Fast Charging (DCFC), Level 3 chargers are found at commercial locations: highway corridors, service stations, and select parking garages around Tampa. They can charge most EVs to 80% in 30 minutes but are not designed or practical for residential installation.

Power output50–350+ kW

Connector Standards

Which Connector Does Your EV Use?

Different EV brands use different charging connectors. We install chargers compatible with all of them and can advise on adapters where needed.

J-1772 (SAE)

The standard AC charging connector used by most non-Tesla EVs in North America. Found on Level 1 and Level 2 charging equipment. Compatible with millions of vehicles currently on the road.

Level 1 & 2 · AC

CCS (Combo)

Combines the J-1772 AC connector with two additional pins for DC fast charging. The primary fast-charging standard for most non-Tesla EVs. Widely supported across public charging networks in Tampa Bay.

Level 2 & 3 · AC/DC

NACS (Tesla / SAE J3400)

Originally the Tesla Connector, now standardized as SAE J3400. Supports both AC and DC charging through a single compact plug. Adopted by nearly all major automakers and rapidly becoming the dominant standard for new EVs.

Level 2 & 3 · AC/DC

CHAdeMO

A DC fast-charging connector developed by Japanese automakers, primarily Nissan and Mitsubishi. Still found on some older EV models but being phased out as NACS and CCS become the dominant standards.

Our Solutions

EV Charging Designed Around Your Home

Not sure which charger you need or whether your panel can support one? That's where we come in.

  • Hardwired Level 2 Charging A permanently installed wall charger, the cleanest, most convenient setup for a dedicated home charging location. Supports Tesla Wall Connector, Universal Wall Connector, ChargePoint, Blink, Wallbox, Emporia, and other leading brands.
  • NEMA 14-50 Outlet Installation Prefer a plug-in setup? We install industrial-grade 240V receptacles rated for the continuous load of EV charging, compatible with portable mobile connector cords for any EV brand.
  • Dual-EV Households Have two electric vehicles? We configure load management solutions so both chargers share available electrical capacity, often without requiring two full independent circuits or an expensive panel upgrade.
  • Load Management If your home doesn't have enough electrical capacity for a traditional EV circuit, automatic load management equipment may be a more cost-effective solution than a full service upgrade.
  • Detached Garages & Long-Run Installations Your charger doesn't have to be next to your panel. We design circuits for detached garages, exterior parking pads, and locations requiring underground conduit, long wiring runs, and other complex transitions.
  • Electrical Panel Upgrades When additional capacity really is needed, we evaluate and complete the necessary panel or service modifications as part of your project, no need to hire a separate contractor.
Home Charging Performance
Level 1 (standard outlet) 3-5 mi/hr
Level 2 · 30A circuit 24-30 mi/hr
Level 2 · 48A / 60A circuit 34-44 mi/hr
Avg. American daily drive 37 miles
What does this mean for you? A Level 2 charger on a 48A circuit can restore the average American's full daily driving range in about 1 hour. Plug in at night, wake up full. Every single day.
Our Process

From Quote to First Charge. We Handle Everything.

Installing an EV charger places a significant continuous load on your home's electrical system. Proper installation starts with understanding your home, not simply mounting a charger on the wall.

Free Home Assessment & Quote

We review your electrical panel, available capacity, preferred charger location, your EV's requirements, and how you use your vehicle day to day. Send us photos of your panel and parking area and our team can usually provide a ballpark or an exact quote very quickly.

Charger Selection & Circuit Sizing

We recommend the right charger hardware and circuit size based on your vehicle, driving habits, and existing electrical system. Not every home needs a 60A circuit. Our goal is the capacity you actually need without unnecessary modifications.

Permitting

EV charger installations in Hillsborough County require an electrical permit. We handle all filings and coordinate any required inspections so your installation is fully code-compliant, protecting you, your home, and your homeowner's insurance coverage.

Professional Installation

Our licensed electricians install the charger, run the dedicated circuit, and complete all wiring to your panel. Simple garage installations can be done in 90 minutes. More complex projects, detached garages, trenching, panel upgrades, are scoped and scheduled accordingly.

Setup & Walkthrough

We connect your charger to your home network (where applicable), verify everything is operating correctly, and walk you through your new setup, including charging schedules, app configuration for smart chargers, and any tips specific to your EV and charger model.

Common Questions

Home EV Charger FAQs: Tampa Bay

Installation cost depends on where your electrical panel is located, the distance to the charger, available electrical capacity, and whether a panel upgrade or conduit run is required. A straightforward garage installation close to an adequately sized panel costs far less than a long-run or panel upgrade project. Send us a photo of your panel and preferred charger location and our team can usually provide a ballpark or firm quote quickly at no cost.
For a dedicated home charging location, hardwired equipment is generally the better choice. It eliminates the receptacle and plug connection, allows some chargers to operate at maximum output, and results in a cleaner installation. A NEMA 14-50 outlet is still a solid option when portability matters, for example if you frequently travel with a charging cord. We'll recommend the right approach for your situation.
Not necessarily. A 60A circuit supports a 48A charger and is the gold standard for home EV charging. But your vehicle may not accept that much power, and your electrical system may be better suited to a 40A or 50A circuit. Our goal is to give you the charging capacity you actually need without unnecessary, expensive modifications.
It depends on how much you drive, when you charge, and Tampa Electric's current rate. On average, most EV owners see an increase of approximately $35-$50 per month on their electric bill. Which replaces what they were spending on gasoline. Charging overnight during off-peak hours on Tampa Electric's rate schedule can reduce that cost further. Over the life of the vehicle, home charging is substantially cheaper than relying on public charging networks.
Yes. In many cases, two charging stations can share available electrical capacity through load management technology rather than requiring two independent full-capacity circuits. This approach is often far more cost-effective than a full panel upgrade. We'll evaluate your panel, your two vehicles' charging needs, and your typical schedule to recommend the most practical setup.
Yes. Your charger doesn't have to be next to your electrical panel. Our electricians routinely design charging circuits for detached garages, exterior parking areas, and locations that require longer wiring routes, underground conduit, and other complex transitions. We'll scope the full project, including any trenching required, during your free assessment.
Yes. EV charger installations in Hillsborough County require an electrical permit and inspection. We handle all permit filings and coordinate the inspection on your behalf. You don't manage any of that paperwork. Installing without a permit can create problems with your homeowner's insurance and home resale inspections, so we don't skip it.
